Story
One of the fathers of the wilderness, who gave a living example of the monk's refusal of almsgiving, relying upon God alone. He said: "If it be God's will for me to live, He knows how to provide for my affairs; and if He wills it not, what have I to do with life?" And when he became paralyzed and bedridden with sickness, he refused to accept any offering from anyone, saying: "If I take anything from another, I have nothing with which to repay him."
He held that the true believer pays no heed to any insult or injustice that befalls him, because his eyes are never turned away from God. He says: "It befits those who draw near to God to look upon Him alone, and to take refuge in Him with reverence; thus they should pay no attention to any insult, even were they wronged ten thousand times over."
