Then they threw themselves down with their faces to the ground and said,“O God, the God of the spirits of all people, will you be angry with the whole community when only one man sins?”
David looked up and saw the LORD’s angel standing between the earth and sky with his sword drawn and in his hand, stretched out over Jerusalem. David and the leaders, covered with sackcloth, threw themselves down with their faces to the ground.
Jesus answered,“You don’t know what you are asking! Are you able to drink the cup I am about to drink?” They said to him,“We are able.”
He went away a second time and prayed,“My Father, if this cup cannot be taken away unless I drink it, your will must be done.”
Going a little farther, he threw himself to the ground and prayed that if it were possible the hour would pass from him.
He went away from them about a stone’s throw, knelt down, and prayed,
For I have come down from heaven not to do my own will but the will of the one who sent me.
“Now my soul is greatly distressed. And what should I say?‘Father, deliver me from this hour’? No, but for this very reason I have come to this hour.
But Jesus said to Peter,“Put your sword back into its sheath! Am I not to drink the cup that the Father has given me?”
Exhortation for the Strong to Help the Weak But we who are strong ought to bear with the failings of the weak, and not just please ourselves.
During his earthly life Christ offered both requests and supplications, with loud cries and tears, to the one who was able to save him from death and he was heard because of his devotion.
