The wicked have drawn out the sword, and have bent their bow, to cast down the poor and needy, [and] to slay such as be of upright conversation.
And what will ye do in the day of visitation, and in the desolation [which] shall come from far? to whom will ye flee for help? and where will ye leave your glory?
‹Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.›
‹It is enough for the disciple that he be as his master, and the servant as his lord. If they have called the master of the house Beelzebub, how much more› [shall they call] ‹them of his household?›
‹Blessed are ye, when men shall hate you, and when they shall separate you› [from their company], ‹and shall reproach› [you], ‹and cast out your name as evil, for the Son of man's sake.›
Simeon hath declared how God at the first did visit the Gentiles, to take out of them a people for his name.
Neither can they prove the things whereof they now accuse me.
Recompense to no man evil for evil. Provide things honest in the sight of all men.
And that the Gentiles might glorify God for [his] mercy; as it is written, For this cause I will confess to thee among the Gentiles, and sing unto thy name.
¶ For our rejoicing is this, the testimony of our conscience, that in simplicity and godly sincerity, not with fleshly wisdom, but by the grace of God, we have had our conversation in the world, and more abundantly to you-ward.
¶ Now I pray to God that ye do no evil; not that we should appear approved, but that ye should do that which is honest, though we be as reprobates.
That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts;
That ye may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom ye shine as lights in the world;
That ye may walk honestly toward them that are without, and [that] ye may have lack of nothing.
Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity.
[Let your] conversation [be] without covetousness; [and be] content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.
¶ Who [is] a wise man and endued with knowledge among you? let him shew out of a good conversation his works with meekness of wisdom.
¶ Having a good conscience; that, whereas they speak evil of you, as of evildoers, they may be ashamed that falsely accuse your good conversation in Christ.
If ye be reproached for the name of Christ, happy [are ye]; for the spirit of glory and of God resteth upon you: on their part he is evil spoken of, but on your part he is glorified.
