Surielthe Archangel
The Story
The Twenty-Seventh Day of the Blessed Month of Tubah
The Commemoration of the Archangel Suriel
On this day the Church commemorates the honorable Archangel Suriel (also called Sarael), one of the seven holy archangels who stand before the throne of God and minister unceasingly in His presence. The Scriptures reveal that among these heavenly princes there are those who stand before the Lord, as the angel said to Zacharias, "I am Gabriel, that stand in the presence of God" (Luke 1:19), and as is written of the seven who stand before God (Revelation 8:2). Suriel is numbered among this glorious company, a herald and trumpeter of the King of kings, whose voice declares the commands of the Most High.
The Coptic tradition recounts that the Archangel Suriel was with Ezra the righteous prophet and scribe, and instructed him concerning many hidden mysteries, opening to him the understanding of things kept secret. For God sends His angels to His servants to comfort, to guide, and to make known His will, even as it is written, Are they not all ministering spirits, sent forth to minister for them who shall be heirs of salvation? (Hebrews 1:14) And the Psalmist sang, The angel of the Lord encampeth round about them that fear him, and delivereth them (Psalms 34:7).
The Archangel Suriel is a tireless intercessor on behalf of sinners, lifting up before God the prayers and tears of the repentant, that they may obtain mercy and forgiveness. He stands as a faithful servant of the Lord's compassion, rejoicing with all the host of heaven over one sinner that repenteth (Luke 15:10). The faithful entreat his prayers, that through his ministry they may be strengthened in the way of repentance and kept from every snare of the enemy.
With all the heavenly hosts, the Archangel Suriel ceaselessly glorifies God, joining the unending hymn of praise, Holy, holy, holy, is the Lord of hosts: the whole earth is full of his glory (Isaiah 6:3). The Church honors his commemoration and seeks his powerful intercession before the throne of grace.
His intercession be with us. Amen.
